Promethazine cough syrup is a cough suppressant. It affects the signals in the brain that trigger the cough reflex.
Promethazine is an antihistamine. It blocks the effects of the naturally occurring chemical histamine in your body.
The combination of dextromethorphan and promethazine used to treat cough, itching, runny nose, sneezing, and itchy or watery eyes caused by colds or allergies.
Dextromethorphan will not treat a cough caused by smoking, asthma, or emphysema.
Promethazine with DM may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
Before taking promethazine, tell your doctor if you have done so;
epilepsy or another seizure disorder;
emphysema or chronic bronchitis;
sleep apnea (breathing stops during sleep);
glaucoma;
a stomach ulcer or digestive obstruction;
bone marrow disorder;
problems with urination;
high blood pressure or heart disease; OR
liver disease.
If you have any of these conditions, you may not be able to use Promethazine with DM, or you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests during treatment.
FDA Pregnancy Category C. This medication may harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.
It is not known whether this medicine passes into breast milk or if it could harm an unborn baby. Do not use dextromethorphan and promethazine without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
PROMETHAZINE AND CODEINE
Because cough and cold medicine is usually taken only as needed, you may not be on a dosing schedule. If you are taking the medicine regularly, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up for the missed dose.
Use
This combination medication is used to temporarily treat a runny nose, cough, and sneezing caused by the common cold, allergies, hay fever, and other respiratory illnesses. Promethazine is a phenothiazine that works as an antihistamine. It blocks the effects of a certain natural substance (histamine), which causes allergy symptoms. It also has a drying effect. Dextromethorphan belongs to a class of medications known as cough suppressants. It acts on a part of the brain (cough center) to reduce the urge to cough.
This product is usually not used for ongoing cough from smoking or long-term breathing problems (such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema) unless directed by your doctor.
Cough and cold products have not been shown to be safe or effective in children younger than 6 years. Therefore, do not use this product to treat cold symptoms in children younger than 6 years unless specifically directed by your doctor. Some products (such as long-acting tablets/capsules) are not recommended for use in children younger than 12 years. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details about using your product safely.
PROMETHAZINE WITH SIDE EFFECTS DM
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Stop using Promethazine with DM and call your doctor immediately if you have any of these serious side effects:
uncontrollable movements of your eyes, lips, tongue, face, arms, or legs;
shaking, twitching, or uncontrolled muscle movements in your face, arms, or legs.
severe dizziness, anxiety, feeling restless, or nervous;
hallucinations (seeing or hearing things);
confusion, hallucinations; OR
slow, shallow breathing, weak pulse;
nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); OR
fever, muscle stiffness, confusion, fast or irregular heartbeat, sweating, fainting.
Continue taking Promethazine with DM and talk to your doctor if you have any of these less serious side effects:
dizziness, drowsiness, sleepiness, or confusion;
blurred vision; dry mouth;
ringing in the ears;
nausea or vomiting; or
increased sensitivity to sunlight.
